Short version: wipe it, let anything damp dry, keep it out of sunlight, and close the case only if everything sits comfortably inside. That's the whole routine. Here's how it plays out.
Step 1: Wipe it down
After a session, Meta suggests a dry microfiber cloth for cleaning, and it says to skip chemical cleansers and alcohol. For the lenses, wipe gently in circles from the center outward (Meta's cleaning guidance). No lens-scrubbing like you're buffing a bowling ball.
Step 2: Let damp parts finish drying
If you've cleaned a removable part, such as a facial interface or fabric strap, Meta says to let it fully air-dry before reinstalling it. Putting it away is the same idea: don't zip a damp part into a dark bag and call it done. That's editorial common sense, not a rule for every strap or accessory, so check the instructions for anything third-party.

Step 3: Pick a shady packing spot
Sunlight is the sneaky one. Meta says to keep the headset away from sun exposure because it can damage the lenses and display, and that includes sun coming through a window indoors. It also advises carrying the headset in a bag or case that protects it from direct sunlight (Meta's sunlight guidance). So pack on a table away from the window, not on the sunny car seat.

Step 4: Lay everything out first
Before anything goes in, set out what you need. Meta's own carrying case page is a handy example inventory: it lists the headset, one head strap, two Touch Plus controllers with lanyards or active straps, one charging cable and one power adapter (Meta carrying case). Your kit may differ, and a different case or strap may not fit the same way.
- Headset
- Strap, including any extra hardware
- Both controllers and their straps
- Charging cable and adapter
- Cloth for a last wipe
Step 5: Pack with a plan
Follow your case maker's instructions and give each item its intended spot. A few habits help:
- Keep cables, adapters and other hard bits away from the lenses.
- Set the headset in gently, lenses protected, rather than dropping it on top of the pile.
- Close the lid slowly.
If the lid pushes against the hardware, stop. Don't sit on it. Open it back up and rearrange, or take out something that doesn't need to come along. Forcing a case shut is how lenses and straps end up with opinions.

Quick departure check
- Lenses wiped, parts dry.
- Nothing in direct sun.
- Controllers, cable and adapter accounted for.
- Lid closes without a fight.
Using an extra strap? Make sure it's made for your exact headset before you pack around it. Our Quest 3 and 3S head strap compatibility checklist covers that.
Do this a few times and it becomes a thirty-second habit, leaving you more time for the fun part.
